Marble Refinishing

Send a photo of the damage or call for a free estimate. We will put a test spot on your own stone so you can see the result before you decide anything.

Marble Refinishing Restores the Surface Without Replacing the Stone

Marble refinishing removes the damaged top layer of stone and rebuilds the finish underneath. It corrects etching, scratches, dull spots and worn walking paths that cleaning cannot fix. In most Atlanta homes the stone itself is sound. Only the surface is hurt, and repairing it costs far less than tearing it out.

Georgia Marble Services is owned and personally operated by a technician with over 10 years of hands-on experience. No subcontractors. Every job starts with a free estimate and a free test spot on your own floor, counter or shower. If the test spot does not convince you, you owe nothing and no deposit is taken.

Can my marble be Restore?

Almost always, yes.

Marble is made mostly of calcite, a mineral that sits at 3 on the Mohs hardness scale and reacts with everyday acids, according to the Natural Stone Institute. A splash of lemon juice, wine or bathroom cleaner dissolves a tiny amount of stone and leaves a dull mark behind.

That damage lives in the very top layer. Grinding past it uncovers clean marble underneath. Some things are harder to fix, such as stains that soaked deep into the stone, rust, and cracked or shifted tiles. You will hear that from us at the test spot, before you spend anything.

How to tell what is wrong with your marble

Etching: A dull, lighter mark that still feels smooth. This is a chemical reaction, not dirt, so scrubbing will never lift it.

Scratches: Run a fingernail across the mark. If it catches, it is a scratch. Grit tracked in off Georgia red clay does this near entry doors.

Dull walking paths: Faint lanes from the garage into the kitchen. Thousands of footsteps slowly rub the shine off.

Stains: Colour that has soaked in from oil, wine or coffee. Different problem, different repair.

Cloudy film: An old sealer or coating breaking down on top of the stone.

What the work costs in Atlanta

Marble floor grinding and polishing typically runs $4 to $5 per square foot, depending on the condition of the floor and the amount of work needed to restore it.

Marble countertop resurfacing and polishing starts at around $600, priced as a flat rate based on the size of the countertop and the specific services needed, whether that is grinding, polishing, sealing or repair. Marble shower restoration is priced the same way.

There is no minimum service fee. Slab pricing for new marble varies widely by material source and we do not quote it, because our focus is restoration rather than slab sales or installation.

Marble floor refinishing across the metro

We work in Metro Atlanta, with most jobs in Buckhead and Vinings.

Those two areas share a pattern. Buckhead high rises along Peachtree Road were built with stone floors running from the entry through the kitchen and bath, and wear shows first in the hallway. Older homes near Chastain Park and off West Paces Ferry Road have foyers and master baths laid twenty or more years ago, dulled by decades of general purpose cleaners. In Vinings, houses close to the Chattahoochee and around Paces Mill Road often carry humidity marks in showers. Refinishing marble floors in these homes usually takes one visit.

Georgians have lived with this stone a long time. The white marble quarried at Tate in Pickens County built the Lincoln Memorial and the columns on the east front of the U.S. Capitol, a history recorded by the Georgia Historical Society. Stone that survives a century outdoors will survive your kitchen.

For condo owners we handle the building side too. Give management notice, book the service elevator, and we work inside your permitted hours.

How the work is done

The surface is ground down using progressively finer diamond grits to remove scratches, etching and wear. It is then brought to a high shine with a polishing compound, and finally sealed to protect against future staining. That last step uses professional grade sealers from Gran Quartz, and it is standard on every marble floor project.

Store bought polishing kits and pastes can add shine for a while. They do not correct deep scratches, etching or uneven wear the way professional diamond grinding does.

Honed vs polished, which should you pick?

Polished marble has a glossy, reflective, mirror like finish. Honed marble is smooth and matte with no shine at all.

Polished stone shows water spots and etching more easily but gives a bright, elegant look. Honed stone hides minor wear and etching better, which is why it suits busy floors and family

bathrooms. Neither one is better outright. It comes down to the look you want and how the room gets used. We convert marble between the two finishes, or bring either back to like new condition.

Granite refinishing

Granite restoration follows a similar process to marble. The surface is ground and polished using diamond abrasives to remove scratches, dullness and etching, then sealed to protect against stains. Granite is denser and more stain resistant than marble, but it still benefits from periodic professional polishing and resealing to keep its shine. Flat rate quote, free test spot, same as marble.

Keeping it looking right afterwards

Clean with a pH neutral stone cleaner, warm water and a soft microfiber mop. Never vinegar, bleach or general all purpose cleaners, since acidic products dull the polish over time. Wipe up spills, especially wine, coffee and citrus, straight away. Use mats at entries to cut down the grit that scratches. Dry the surface after cleaning so you do not get water spots.
